MY BAKING ADVENTURE

A lifelong desire to create and perfect little moments of heaven led me on a globe trotting baking adventure.

 

My pursuit to create the ultimate bake first took me to Cordon Bleu Cookery School. My inclination to spread my wings then whisked me off to to France where I worked as a luxury ski chalet chef. Next was Sydney where I worked in a wonderful bistro. It was at catering company in Perth where I learned the benefit of creating bespoke concepts rather than a one size fits all approach.

When I came back to leafy Hertfordshire, where I’m from, I joined the local St Albans running club (Striders) and was appointed as ‘tea and cake girl’ which gave me the opportunity to start testing my own products on hungry runners.

 

A bunch of brilliant baking gigs later I thought there might be a gap in the market here in St Albans and Harpenden. A gap in the shape of an innovative, creative baker.

But the story of Double Yum was actually born out of a childhood where every spare moment was spent in the kitchen with my mum.

 

Mum is a wedding cake baker and gastronomic queen. My earliest memories are of her effortlessly conjuring up sumptuous feasts for endless tea parties and dinner parties in our house, which was always full of life and laughter. So my introduction to cooking was one of joy.

I would rather spend time with her stood on a stool, watching, learning, helping and of course the best bit... licking the bowl, than watching TV.

Her cooking always caused a storm and any leftovers of her famous pavlova would be eaten for breakfast.. For me that was my little moment of heaven: biting through that crispy outer layer to reach the soft mallow inside; balanced by the sweet cream and sharp fruit.

 

Now I want to give others those little moments when they take a bite of one of my creations.
